Whether it’s enhancing crop yields, managing risks, or connecting to the market, Farm Circle is more than just an application—it’s a complete solution designed to transform the future of farming.
Challenges
Farming in India, a profession that has sustained families for generations, is now facing numerous challenges. The Economic Survey of India 2022-2023 reveals that farmers’ incomes have stagnated or even declined over the past three years, with the average farmer earning just about Rs. 1,07,112 annually. Middlemen, or commission agents, purchase produce at low prices, charge hefty commissions, and inflate costs for consumers while reducing the farmer’s earnings.
Farmers also struggle with a shortage of labor, as high wages make it difficult to find affordable workers. The cost of agricultural machinery and the inability to purchase or own farmland add further financial strain. Additionally, access to quality seeds and the knowledge needed to care for them is limited, leading to lower yields and income.
The younger generation, who could bring new ideas into farming, often lacks the necessary knowledge and support, pushing them away from agriculture. Those who stay face high transportation costs and the challenge of storing unsold produce. Despite growth in the agricultural sector, many farmers remain trapped in debt, worsened by delayed payments and manipulated market prices.
Climate change adds another layer of uncertainty, with unpredictable weather and water scarcity, particularly in drought-prone areas. Overuse of chemical fertilizers has led to soil degradation, making sustainable farming difficult. Land fragmentation further hinders the adoption of modern farming practices.
On the technical front, many farmers struggle with using mobile apps and devices, especially in areas with poor internet connectivity. Gender inequality also persists, with women lacking the same access to resources as men, despite their significant role in farming.
Legal and policy challenges, along with the social stigma of financial failure, contribute to the mental stress farmers face, leading to rising rates of farmer suicides in some regions. Farmers interested in organic or niche farming often struggle to access markets that value such products, leading to wasted produce and frustration.
On the other side, buyers also face significant challenges. They often find it difficult to access fresh, locally grown produce, as the lengthy supply chain between farmers and consumers leads to inflated prices and compromised freshness. Consumers, especially in urban areas, desire fresh vegetables, fruits, and grains, but the inefficient distribution system often leaves them with limited and lower-quality options. Additionally, buyers have limited visibility into when and where certain crops will be available, making it hard to plan purchases effectively.
In light of these challenges, there is a vast opportunity for change. The question remains: how can we build a system that truly supports farmers, simplifies their work, and ensures that fresh, fairly priced produce reaches consumers efficiently?
The Process
Design Thinking
I used Design Thinking as my design methodology, focusing solely on the farmer’s experience in the current design process. This human-centered approach allowed me to deeply understand and address the challenges farmers face. The buyer flow will be developed as a separate application with its own distinct design process, planned for a later phase.

Secondary Research
For the secondary research process of Farm Circle, I conducted a thorough analysis of existing data, reports, and literature to gain a comprehensive understanding of the agricultural landscape and the challenges faced by farmers. This research phase involved gathering insights from various sources, including government reports, academic studies, market analysis, and industry trends.
I began by reviewing the Economic Survey of India 2022-2023, which highlighted the stagnation and decline in farmers’ incomes over recent years. This report provided crucial context for understanding the economic pressures on farmers and the role of middlemen in reducing their earnings. Additionally, I explored studies on climate change and its impact on agriculture, focusing on issues like unpredictable weather patterns, water scarcity, and soil degradation. These studies helped me understand the environmental factors that affect crop yields and farming sustainability.
I also examined market reports that detailed the challenges within the agricultural supply chain, particularly the inefficiencies in distribution and the role of middlemen in inflating prices. This information was essential in identifying the pain points that both farmers and consumers face in accessing fresh produce.
Furthermore, I looked into the use of technology in agriculture, including mobile apps and AI-driven tools, to understand the current level of digital adoption among farmers. This research shed light on the technical barriers, such as slow internet connectivity and the lack of digital literacy, that many farmers encounter.
By synthesizing these findings, I was able to build a solid foundation of knowledge that informed the design process. The insights gained from secondary research were instrumental in shaping the direction of Farm Circle, ensuring that the solution was grounded in real-world challenges and opportunities within the agricultural sector.
